We have never been more mindful of our immunity than we are today, and it will be a significant term in the upcoming year with items such as “immune-enhancing” products surely occupying store shelves. But while immune health is largely fostered from the earliest part of life and we might not be able to do a complete overhaul, there are still things we can implement to assist it and ensure our immunity thrives such as, eating healthfully, getting a good night’s sleep and taking care of gut health.
Did you know a study reveals that adult females mount stronger innate and adaptive immune responses than males. As such, gaining a better understanding of the immune response of the sexes could help pave the way for more targeted and effective treatments for both men and women. Sans Wellness aims to personalize therapy so that we can optimize outcomes but in the mean time, these are the things you could do on daily basis too:
Care for your Guts:
Your digestive tract is home to 80% of your immune-boosting cells. Amazing, right? These immune cells not only protect the intestinal lining, it contains approximately 40 trillion bacteria and over 1000 species that live in the gut and communicate with these immune cells. Interestingly, the foods we eat and don’t eat affect the diversity of our gut bacteria, enhancing or weakening the body’s ability to fight off disease. Adding a healthy, non-inflammatory diet not only aids digestion and improves food absorption, but it also works to shift the focus of the immune system elsewhere and reduce inflammation throughout the body.
Get off your chair and Move: Moderate exercise improves the antibody response to infection. However, overtraining or overtraining without breaks increases vulnerability to infection and injury. Aim to exercise daily, but alternate between cardio, strength training, stretching, and meditation.
Stay calm: We all know the importance of chronic sleep deprivation, or disruption of the sleep-wake cycle, leading to an inflammatory immune response and preparation for illness and disease. Aim for 7-8 hours a night on a regular basis. Try to reduce stress in every possible way.
Also, superheroes can get sick despite getting enough sleep and vitamin C. Everything is going well! For the health of you and those around you, make sure you’re fully charged before charging.
